The Need
The University of New Mexico (UNM) football team was missing too many practices every fall
because of thunderstorms and other bad weather. This was especially evident when they
missed two practices for the New Mexico Bowl because of snow. There was also a concern
that UNM was falling behind in recruiting because many competing schools within their
conference had indoor facilities. The University needed a cost-effective indoor facility that
could be ready for the start of practice in August 2007. After doing their homework, the
University visited the Summit™ Structure at Texas A&M in College Station, TX. The fit and
finish of the building's interior and exterior and Summit's level of expertise, convinced UNM
that Summit was the right company, and produced the right building, for the job.
The Solution
The University had an aggressive budget target and a very short time frame in which to
complete the project. Summit Structures met their time restriction and budget constraints
by constructing a 210' w x 410' l (64m x 125m) Custom Building; a 76' (23m) tall
fabric-membrane building with 12' (3.5m) steel sidewalls. No other type of construction
could have met the University's two requirements, while still providing a state of the art
indoor facility the entire community could be proud of. The building houses a full football
field plus a seven-yard run-out on both the ends and sides. After the construction of the
Summit Structure, the UNM Lobos had their most successful season in the 10 year reign of
their current coach, Rocky Long, and won a post season bowl game for the first time in
nearly 40 years. Even thought the structure was originally designed for an indoor practice
for the football team, the University and students enjoy it so much that they now open it up
for other forms of physical activity.
The Project
Summit arrived on site on June 22, 2007 and the facility was completed and ready for use
in less than 8 weeks, perfect timing for the upcoming Lobo season. The structure was
designed with 12' (3.5m) steel sidewalls that incorporates the school's colors, and also
features a Naizil PVC outer skin and inner liner to match. The University decided to go with
a concrete ring beam for the foundation and minimal lighting was needed for the facility,
since an astounding amount of natural light enters the structure through the fabric lining.
Due to New Mexico's climate, there was no need for heating or air conditioning for the
structure; all that was required were two large fans to move the fresh air through the structure.
The building's location on the grounds is behind the football stadium, as future plans include
adding another structure and connecting the practice facility to the stadium itself.
Customer Comments
"It's neat to have, and it's beautiful. There have been times in the past where we've missed practice because of thunder and lightning. In the
winter, it allows you a place to go to get work done, without elements being a problem, and there's a recruiting advantage," Rocky Long,
UNM Head Coach.
"It's a great addition for our program. We get more practice time but we also get another asset, another thing to be proud of," Vince Natali,
UNM Center.
