The Need

Sagemont School is a private school near Ft. Lauderdale providing education for children from kindergarten through Grade 12. Prior to 2004, students were limited to outdoor practices in the Florida heat and playing 'away' games as there was no facility to house the school's activity programs. With an increased focus on scholastic sports, the school required an indoor facility to accommodate year round practice. The structure needed to include a multipurpose court - regulation size for basketball and volleyball - as well as a 750-person auditorium. The project was originally introduced as a turn-key project and was later broken down into building bid and site work.

The Solution

Summit Structures was advised of the project by a Lead Generator attending a tradeshow who had spoken with the owner of Sagemont School about building options. Summit responded promptly and was awarded the project based on cost and speed of construction. Summit Structures partnered with Herman Construction Services Inc., a local construction company, to complete the Sagemont School field house.

Summit introduced the Lead Generator Program four years ago as a formal referral program. Individuals who sign up as an active lead generator and pass along building opportunities to Summit Structures, will be compensated for any opportunity passed that turns into a building sale.

The Project

With the many hurricanes to hit Florida in the year 2000, a series of upgrades in the state building code required a membrane structure to meet all provisions. Of particular notice was the "impact provision" code, aka missile test, which required the structure and membrane to meet a wind speed of 158mph (254.3 km/h). Summit Structures successfully completed the testing in the early summer of 2004 and compliance for building occupancy in September of 2004.

Summit responded with a 70' wide x 110' long (21.3m x 33.5m) Custom Pinnacle structure. The structure was built on what was previously a soccer field on the lower school campus. Summit's scope of work included the building, PVC membrane, liner, R19 insulation, doors, tera-flex flooring system, liner ventilation system, hanging points and rain gutters. Modifications were made to the design of the building to include the collateral load requirements of the basketball nets, scoreboards, etc.

The building's interior liner contributes to the aesthetics of the structure as well as provides improved distribution of light and sound dampening qualities. A Summit Structure provides crisp, clear acoustics - exceptional for coaching and performances. The fabric dampens sound waves instead of reflecting and creating echo effects.

With a 37' (11.2m) peak, the structure encompasses over 7,700 square feet (715.3 m²) of open space with no partitions, offices or other interior rooms - allowing more activity. Two electronic score boards surround the multipurpose court along with a sound system for a public address announcer. A curtain allows the court to be separated in half, allowing more than one team to practice. For fine arts performances, the structure has a portable stage, sound system, dressing rooms and seating for 750 spectators.

Summit Structures was able to meet all timelines for the install in time for the opening of the school in September 2004.

Customer Feedback

"The Sagemont 'Dome' is one of the finest sports/cultural centers in Florida. As an athletic facility it is state of the art and rivals the arenas for professional teams. We use the facility for basketball, volleyball and physical education classes. Our special lighting enables us to convert the 'Dome' into an auditorium that holds 750 people for plays and concerts. When I see the New England Patriot and Dallas Cowboy facilities on ESPN, I'm proud that our 'Dome' is of the same quality! We are particularly pleased that our facility satisfies the Florida hurricane codes." - Richard Goldman, Vice President - The Sagemont School
