The Need
With late season weather a perennial consideration in the Boston area, the New England Patriots were forced to
replace their aging air-supported structure. Since the season was already underway, time was obviously working
against team officials. Following significant due diligence, factors such as reputation, professionalism, and the need
to meet aggressive timelines led the Patriots to choose Summit Structures over all other suppliers.
The Solution
Given the maintenance and up-keep difficulties experienced with the previous air supported structure, the Patriots were
determined to utilize a more dependable, advanced building system. Team officials found the answer to all of their needs
in a massive 80,000 square foot (7432 m²) Pinnacle™ structure - designed, manufactured, and installed
by Summit in a mere 16 weeks. The structure, measuring 250' wide x 320' long (76.2m x 97.5m), encloses the team's
artificial turf practice field. With a peak height of 85' (25.9m), and a sidewall height of 45' (13.7m), all aspects of practice
were easily incorporated - including special teams drills.
The Project
To meet the massive clear-span dimensions, Summit's design department created a steel truss frame that incorporated the
45 lb. snow load in the Boston area.
As the general contractor, Summit's contract included not only the installation of the structure, but also the design and
installation of a totally unique foundation - consisting of a nonstructural ring beam, with spread footings and rock anchors
to compensate for uplift loads.
The indoor facility includes a full-sized artificial turf football field, running track, and two observation towers for coaches
to monitor practice sessions.
The Details
From the player's perspective, the combination of the highly reflective PVC fabric and the specifically designed lighting
layout create an internal playing environment that is unparalleled.
The building also provides the team the opportunity to hold closed practices.
Customer Feedback
"Last week we experienced a significant snowfall - totaling nearly 3' (0.9m) in less that 36 hours. While other structures on our
site gave way under the weight of the snow, your 250' (76.2m) clear-span structure remained solid. Our team was able to prepare
for the next game - unaffected by the conditions outside. We won the game and clinched the AFC Division title. We are
extremely pleased with our new practice facility and would recommend Summit Structures to anyone seeking an opinion."
