The Need

Coxlease School Sports Hall is a residential special school for up to 55 boys ages 9 to 16 years and is located at Lyndhurst, Hampshire within the New Forest National Park.

Early in 2004 a need to improve the onsite facilities for the boys was highlighted and various Sports Halls were investigated including looking at the Summit™ Structures provision at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton Football Clubs.

It was decided to invest in a Summit™ Structures Hall by the virtue of cost. This was not, however, going to be a simple design and build therefore Coxlease brought in architects to modify the building to prevent damage from the boys at the school.

The Solution

Coxlease is a highly specialised school, dealing with teenage students with severe behavioural problems. There are several similar establishments throughout the country. The building solution needed to fit the requirements of the school, as well as the requirements of the National Park Planning Department.

To meet these needs, Summit Structures designed a 21m wide x 34m long (65' x 111.5') custom profile building incorporating both tensioned fabric membrane building components for the roof systems and more traditional walls and cladding for the sides and ends. Naizil PVC fabric was used to cover the roof. Sidewalls and gables were clad in a combination of cedar boards and ETFE foil, stressed panels.

The Details

The project design included cedar cladding the outside to a height of 16.4' (5 metres) and raising the internal rebound boards to a height of 9.8' (3 metres). In order to satisfy the stringent height restrictions of the National Park Planning Department the Hall had to be lowered 9.8' (3 metres) into the ground and translucent panels introduced at the eaves level. Summit began installation in June 2005 and completed within the time frame and on budget.

Customer Feedback
