The Need

Gulf Facilities General Trading and Contracting Company (GFT) from Kuwait was contracted by the US Military to research the tension fabric structures for the Operation Iraqi Freedom initiative.

The Solution

After extensive research, Indy Singh with GFT concluded that Summit Structures was the ideal tension fabric structure manufacturer. "These types of structures are not very common in this part of the world. We actually had never seen the type of technology the US Military spoke of," said Indy Singh, Technical Manager, GFT.

The relationship was solidified between Summit Structures and GFT at the Rebuilding Iraq Conference in 2003. GFT received an inquiry from Basra, Iraq shortly thereafter for two 50' wide x 100' long (15.2m x 20.4) vehicle maintenance facilities. Summit Structures was awarded the contract based on the delivery timelines promised and GSA contract requirements. The two vehicle maintenance facilities were shipped by truck to Vancouver, Canada and then air-freighted to Basra, Iraq to meet the aggressive timelines outlined.

The Project

The buildings feature single arch series profiles as a design base. As with every Summit Structure, the buildings utilize the highest quality building components to meet all site demands while staying within the outlined budget. The proven ViperSteel® galvanized frames are built in accordance with strict military specifications and meet or exceed all regional building codes. For the exterior fabric membrane, Summit Structures' DuraWeave® FR fabric membrane represents durability and cost-effectiveness.

"The response from Summit Structures was good; the sales team was very helpful. If Summit says they will ship by this date, they will deliver in full by the date promised. Price was also on target and was very detailed," said Singh.

In 2004, the US Army needed to extend warehouse facilities to house materials in Qatar. Based on the aggressive timelines put forward, they knew only a tension fabric structure supplier would be able to deliver in the time needed. The Army surveyed companies with a GSA contract for tension fabric structures. Summit Structures was awarded the project based on their ability to meet these delivery timelines. Neal Giddings from Summit Structures was onsite to supervise the installation of these 12 warehouse facilities. GFT was again approached as a subcontractor to Summit Structures to assist with coordinating the project in Qatar.

Using in-house installation crews from the US, augmented with local labor in Qatar and coordinated by GFT, Summit Structures delivered and installed on an essential Gulf Facilities General Trading and Contracting Company (GFT) from Kuwait was contracted by the US Military to research the tension fabric structures for the Operation Iraqi Freedom initiative. twelve building contract. "The installation crews were among the best guys I've ever seen. They did an excellent job," says Singh.

The buildings are Summit Structures TITAN® Low Slope series - constructed using the patented ViperSteel® truss. Summit Structures DuraWeave® FR fabric was used to clad the structures, but specifically arranged to maximize efficiency; each structure utilizes a combination of opaque and translucent fabric to allow for a degree of natural light. Electrical costs are minimized, yet the opaque portions block excessive solar gain, thereby limiting demand on the cooling systems.

In order to meet the Army's timelines, Summit Structures was able to fabricate and ship all materials to site within 90 days of contract. Each Summit Structures building is equipped with a complete HVAC / dehumidification system to ensure a moisture-free environment for the military's pre-positioned equipment, as well as full electrical and lighting packages.

Customer Feedback

"Once the building is up, it's beautiful. The customer was very impressed with the end product based on the speed it was constructed," said Singh.
