The Need
The Greensboro Coliseum Complex needed additional space to accommodate the multitude of bookings for the
onsite facilities. Often customers looking to book the existing Complex facilities ran into the problem of either needing
additional space to accommodate large groups and a wide range of activities or a smaller area with lower rental
rates.
The Solution
The Greensboro Coliseum Complex chose Summit Structures to provide a
solution to their space problems. Summit Structures supplied and installed a
150' wide x 200' long (45.7m x 60.9m) steel-frame, fabric membrane facility
within the timelines requested by Greensboro.
"We chose Summit Structures because of the uniqueness of the building,
ability to meet our timeline and by providing a competitive price structure that
fit within our budget demands," said Scott E. Johnson, Deputy Director at the
Greensboro Coliseum Complex Pavilion. "The primary purpose we
purchased this structure for is additional exhibit and meeting space for conventions, consumer shows, trade shows
and exhibitions. It was originally intended to have a shorter life when a new permanent expansion is constructed
however we believe this structure now has a much longer lifespan for our uses."
The Project
The 30,000 sq. foot (2787 m²) structure was completed in March of 2003. Equipped with heating and airconditioning,
the Pavilion provides clear-span exhibition space for a
variety of rentals including sporting events, flea markets, event galas, dog
shows, concerts, etc.
"Rental clientele includes larger events requiring additional exhibit space
beyond the Special Events Center (SEC) capacity; special events that
require a 'unique' type of space such as our ACC Fanfest or Central
Carolina Fair; and smaller events needing 30,000 sq. foot (2787 sq.
meter) space when the SEC is already booked with another event," says
Johnson.
The Details
The Greensboro grounds can now accommodate numerous rental clients which means more revenue in the long run.
"Facility rental is applied to the Coliseum budget. Revenue varies annually but we are hosting over 100 use days
annually which is important towards our overall bottom line," says Johnson. "Size, location, and service by staff are a
few of the reasons clients choose the Greensboro Pavilion for rental space. However, our Pavilion is permanent with
bathrooms and HVAC. This makes it just like permanent exhibit space and ultimately most of our customer and
tradeshow users are looking for large column-free spaces with appropriate services."
Customer Feedback
"We get hurricanes and snowfall in North Carolina. The structure has held
up impeccably with no problems at all from weather. Overall, we have an
extremely high opinion of the effectiveness of the structure that was
supplied. This application was exactly what we envisioned when we began
this project to provide a cheaper method of construction of additional
space," says Johnson.
